SPORTS: Why Red Sox Nation Knew
By mark on 29 Sep
Every Red Sox fan knew what yesterday was going to bring. Every TRUE Red Sox fan, the ones who grew up with the endless disappointments and heartbreak - not these new age, Papelbon jersey wearing, 2 championship titles later fans.
All the real Red Sox fans still have that pit in the bottom of their stomach when late September/October comes around. A place where pessimism brews subconsciously as quickly as the reoccurring late season fall outs.
These fans saw this last game of the season as a further opportunity for their Sox to add to the lure of pain. For some reason the Red Sox are part of a select group of professional teams that continually find ways to slowly melt the hearts of their fans in new and ever heart wrenching ways - year after year.
The classic Red Sox fan saw this end of year melt down as a relatively easy defeat to handle (insert pain of Bucky F'ing Dent and Bill Buckner).
We saw it coming.
The Rays remind the classic Red Sox fan of a little bit of our self, back in 2004 down by 3 to the Yanks in the ALCS. The power of the underdog. I hope the dozens of Rays fans savor the underdog, come from behind, never say die team they have. They won't though.
Yesterday's games where played out in the heads of true Red Sox fans hours before the games happened. The last minute home run, come from behind, we got in the bag - only to be let down and disappointed type scenarios that our favorite hometown team puts us in generation after generation.
After all, it is the charm of the Red Sox. Has been for almost a century. Now our 2 World Series rings give us less to complain about, less to be grumpy about. But, it still burns the same way as it did before.
Ask any real Red Sox fan and they most likely went to bed Wednesday night when the Sox had the lead, Rays down by 7 runs and STILL closed their eyes knowing they would find a way to blow it. That's a true Sox fan. A realist, a pessimist and a passionate loser. All that winning in 04' and 07' kind of screwed things up for us a little bit.
This feeling is a lot more comfortable for us.
Who doesn't love listening to sports talk radio when theres something to bust someones balls about. We want to point the finger at someone. It give us something to complain about until Spring Training.
So, let the rumor mill begin. Who will get fired? Traded? All the juice the better. After all, it's a long cold winter and it doesn't look like Celtics are going to be keeping us warm at night. (The Bruins probably will though.)
True Sox fans, ya we saw yesterday coming. But, There's always next year. Right?
